Cape Hatteras campgrounds feature two types of sites.
The first site is for basic camping in Cape Hatteras with a grassy area to pitch your tent. There is direct access to water/electricity and pets are welcome.
The second site features a grassy area to pitch your tent, access to water/electricity and a covered pavilion with seating.
If you want to enjoy camping in Cape Hatteras, then these five sites are an excellent choice.
If tent camping isn’t quite your style, then check our their camping cabins. You have a choice between a 1 room cabin or a 2 room cabin and neither features a bathroom or kitchen, so you’ll have to use the facilities located throughout the Cape Hatteras campground.
The cabins feature a front porch with swing, a fire pit and picnic table. Linens are not included, but you can rent them from the camp store. Pets are welcome and there is A/C and heat available. Each cabin features multiple beds with a configuration of bunks and full size beds.
There are 32 camping cabins, which makes it a great option for large groups.
The KOA Cape Hatteras RV resort is extremely popular with multiple site types with 15 premium sites, 8 patio sites, 1 deluxe (50 amp site), 73 sites with water/electricity, 67 full hook up (30/50 amp), and 33 full hook up sites. That’s almost 200 RV sites!
Pets are welcome at all RV sites, so be sure to bring your pup! There is also a dumping station and propane fueling station on site
There are a wide variety of deluxe cabins for families of all sizes. There are raised units as well as lowered/patio style cabins.
You can get a one room up to a two bedroom cabin with a full bed and two sets of bunk beds. You also have the choice of a partial kitchen (microwave, sink, refrigerator) or a full kitchen (addition of a stove top). If you plan to bring your pet, be sure to make sure you reserve a deluxe cabin that is pet friendly.
Want to enjoy all the amenities of the Cape Hatteras KOA, but like the comfort of a hotel room? Then check out their vacation rental rooms! The rooms range from one queen bed up to two queen beds. You’ll enjoy a full kitchen, living room area and deck with views!
*All of the sites and rentals include free wifi!
Check out this video of our Deluxe raised pet friendly cabin!
If you aren’t able to watch the video, I’ll include photos of the inside of the cabin below. The one we stayed in featured a bunk room off to the right with two bunk beds for a total of 4 beds. My only complaint was that it was hard to make the room dark for bedtime.
The living room, kitchen and dining room is combined with a sleeper sofa, flat screen tv, and four person table with pop up sides. The kitchen has a fridge, stove top (no oven), microwave, Keurig machine (with some coffee/tea) toaster oven and sink. They have non stick pans, but only metal utensils, which isn’t great because it scratches the Teflon.
There is a full bathroom with plenty of towels and a tub. The bathroom also has ample shampoo, conditioner, body wash and soap. Then at the end of the hall is the master bedroom with queen size bed, television, suitcase rack and hooks.
On the deck you’ll find outdoor furniture with a table for four and two loungers. There is also a gas grill for use.
The deluxe apartments have two AC units. One in the living room area and one in the master bedroom. There are also heaters if you come in the off season and need some warmth. There are two parking spaces under the cabin and then additional parking in the lot next to the cabins.
Cape Hatteras KOA Facilities and Amenities
One of the reasons we chose to stay at the KOA Cape Hatteras, North Carolina was the pet friendly and family friendly amenities that it offered. We wanted to enjoy a relaxed beach vacation with the comforts of home, plenty to keep our active son busy and a place where our dog could also have fun. The Cape Hatteras KOA checked off all of these boxes! I’ll share all the amazing things there are to see and do at this KOA campground.
I can’t say enough good things about the pool. It’s huge! I love how it wraps around the building, has two water slides and a zero entry (beach style) entry for little ones at the far end. The pool also features two “lap lanes” for swimmers who want to get a bit of exercise. The pool is not overly deep, I believe the max depth is 4 feet.
There are plenty of chairs, lounge chairs, high top tables and places to store your items. I appreciate the covered area with shade and quick access to the restrooms.
There is a very large and clean hot tub next to the pool. It was popular on a cool day in May. The pool and hot tub are open until 10pm, so there is plenty of time to take advantage of the facilities.
Kids Play Zone
KOA Cape Hatteras knows how to make sure the kids are having fun! Right next to the fenced in pool area is a large kids zone complete with a pirate ship play area. Climb the mast, yell “ahoy” to your mates and slide down the pole to the soft sand below. Did I mention the sand? Yep, so bring your toys and play happily.
Directly next to the pirate play area is a massive “jumping pillow”. Hours of fun were had here! There is also a smaller jumping mat for toddlers and preschoolers who aren’t quite ready for the larger jumping area.
Near the K-9 Park, you’ll see another fun pirate area where you can take all the selfie’s you want with the buccaneers! In addition, you’ll be able to see a beach volleyball court, tether-ball court and horse shoe throwing zone.
This is why you came, right? The wide, sandy beach with rolling waves and great fishing opportunities!
There are two access points from the KOA campground over the dunes to the white fluffy sand and salty waves. You should be able to find plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the sunshine.
Dogs are welcome on the beach year round. Just be sure to bring a leash, bags for clean up, some fresh water and shade.
Dog Friendly Zones
Sometimes it is hard to travel with dogs because many places are not dog friendly. This is NOT the case at the KOA Cape Hatteras Campground. This KOA has made dog ownership a breeze! Most of the accommodations are pet friendly and you’ll see plenty of dog friends around the camp lounging outside their owners RV, going for a walk along the beach or playing in the K-9 pouch area.
This KOA features a K-9 area for off leash playtime. There is a gate to enter a smaller area and then another gate to enter a larger area with agility equipment (tunnels, bridges and teeter totters). There is a pet waste station to help keep the park clean.
Another favorite, the dog washing station located in the center of the campground near the showers/bathrooms. The pet washing station has a ramp for your pup to walk into the tub. Then you can close the opening and use the detachable shower head to give your pup a good wash. This came in handy quite a few times after playing in the ocean and on the beach.
We were impressed with the cleanliness of the facilities and how many bathrooms and showers were scattered throughout the campsite. There are two buildings complete with lockable indoor showers and bathrooms. In addition, there are outdoor showers located at each beach entrance, as well as bathrooms located near the northern beach entrance.
If you are fishing or need an outdoor sink to wash dishes, you’ll find sinks at each bath/shower house as well as down by the beach. In addition, there are restrooms located near the pool, in the main check-in building and near the games rooms in the main building.
Facilities: Laundry/Games Room
Staying for awhile? You’ll appreciate the two laundry areas. The first is located in the main building on the second floor overlooking the pool area (next to the games room). The second laundry area is smaller and located in the second shower/bath house on the south side of the campground (close to the beach).
They have laundry detergent ($1 per tide pod), bleach and dryer sheet packages (in case you forget to bring some).
There is also a games room located in the main building on the second floor overlooking the pool. You’ll find a change machine, along with a Foosball table, shooting games and some old fashioned video games. Everything was in good working order during our stay. It’s the perfect activity for a rainy day.
There is one on site restaurant, Sheila’s Carolina Kitchen. During the busy season, it is open for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Snacks. We were visiting in mid-May, so they were only open for Breakfast and Lunch.
We enjoyed our breakfast one morning at Sheila’s Carolina Kitchen. There were plenty of options, including a few options for vegetarians. There were fewer options for vegetarians for lunch, so we did not return and ventured to many of the restaurants in the area.
In addition, the main building offers quite a few food options and drinks during your stay. We had hoped for smoothies or blended alcoholic drinks, but didn’t find any options. They do have beer, canned alcoholic drinks and wine available.
The Cape Hatteras KOA offers quite a few rentals. Everything from golf carts ($65 per day), bikes ($15 1/2 day), paddleboards ($15 per hour), Kayaks ($10/$15 per hour single/double) and fishing supplies (including pole rentals).
Be sure to visit the front desk to arrange your equipment rentals.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy year round at the KOA Cape Hatteras Campground. We were visiting during their “Big Weekend” that raises money for kids with cancer to attend camps throughout the US.
The KOA hosted a variety of events including a free ride on their fun train, tie dye, s’mores around the campfire, a cook out and silent auction.
In the summer months (peak season), they offer campfire time, express fun train rides, an outdoor cinema, bingo, rock painting, tie dye and more!
